Young fans of the Demon Slayer franchise in Brazil are outraged. The reason is that they have been banned from watching Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, the latest installment of the franchise, which premiered this past Thursday (09/11) in Brazilian cinemas.
The country’s Ministry of Justice decided that the film produced by Ufotable must maintain its 18+ age rating, as previously set by the Federal Executive Branch. Therefore, viewers under 16 are prohibited from attending screenings. Audiences aged 17 to 18 may only watch the film if accompanied by a guardian or with a signed authorization from one.

The ban is due to Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle containing elements such as “fear, sensitive themes, and extreme violence.” Distributor Sony Pictures had requested a 14+ rating, but their appeal was denied by the Ministry of Justice. In Japan, the film was rated suitable for viewers aged 12 and up. In the U.S., it received an R rating, so viewers under 16 can attend screenings as long as they are accompanied by their parents.
Despite the restriction, Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle had the third-biggest opening of the year in Brazil, selling 320,000 tickets on its opening day alone. Worldwide, the film has already grossed over $272 million. In the U.S., Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle achieved the record for the biggest anime movie opening ever, surpassing Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero (2022). Everything indicates that the film will continue breaking records.
